How do I keep my bones strong?

Your doctor will talk with you about your risk for breaking a bone. You will learn easy steps to take to keep your bones strong:

  1. Eat a healthy diet rich in calcium
Calcium is found in diary products like milk and yogurt, and some non dairy foods such as fortified juices, cereals, canned salmon and spinach. You need between 1,000 and 1,500 mg. EVERY DAY! If you do not eat enough food with calcium, you may need a supplement.

  2. Take vitamin D tablets
Most people need 1,000-2,000 units of vitamin D. Check your calcium tablets for vitamin D.
  3. Exercise
Your bones need exercise just like your muscles. Walking and dancing are great for bones. Try to be active every day.
  4. Stop smoking and reduce alcohol consumption
The best thing you can do for yourself is to stop smoking. Limit alcohol to one drink per day.
  5. Take the medicine your doctor recommends
There are medicines that can keep bones from getting weaker. These medicines can help you prevent breaking a bone if you take them properly.
